National Pretzel Day Fun Facts

It’s a food that satisfies our salty cravings… today we celebrate the pretzel! Warm and doughy, the traditional soft pretzel hits the spot for hungry patrons at ballgames, amusement parks, fairs, food courts and more. Just for fun, we’ve put together a collection of facts about the history, flavors and little-known trivia tidbits about one of our favorite snacks.

  • In terms of history, the soft pretzel came first. And it is largely believed that they originated by Christian monks in Italy around 610 A.D. They were shaped to resemble arms crossed in prayer and given as a reward to children who learned their prayers.
  • Fitting with its origin, the name pretzel comes from the word “pretiola” or “little rewards.”
  • The Baker’s Guild used the pretzel as its symbol in the late 12th century. Baking the perfect pretzel was necessary to become a master.
  • Pretzels were a part of wedding ceremonies in the 16th century. Similar to a wishbone, the bride and groom would make a wish, break the pretzel and eat it as a symbol of their union.
  • The first pretzel to journey to America is thought to have come over on the Mayflower.
  • While the pretzel shape is symbolic in origin, it is also practical. Bakers could hang them by their loops on strings and sticks, making it convenient to display.
  • Pretzels have been a part of Easter traditions and were even hidden in the same way as Easter eggs.
  • What state is home to 80% of the nation’s pretzel production? Pennsylvania! (It is also where the most pretzels are eaten!)
  • About $550 million worth of pretzels are sold in the United States on an annual basis.
  • It is estimated that Americans consume about two pounds of pretzels each year.
  • Pretzels are often accompanied by toppings and can also be stuffed. Popular flavors include melted cheese, mustard, caramel or icing.
  • Unsalted pretzels have earned the nickname of “baldies.”
  • How big is your appetite? The largest pretzel weighed in at 842 pounds and was 26.8 feet long and 10.2 feet wide!
  • For sellers, pretzels offer attractive profit projections. At an affordable retail price of $2-$3, you can still achieve a 50%-60% profit margin.
  • Soft pretzels were originally handmade and baked. To keep them fresher longer, they then progressed to being frozen and warmed in humidified cabinets. Now, there is a shelf-stable product that does not require freezing. Meister Bake® Pretzels can be enjoyed right out of the pack. Available in salted, unsalted and cinnamon & sugar flavors.
