What Social Media Can Teach You About The Concession Food Business

The way we communicate will never be the same. Social media has revolutionized the way society interacts. This change in culture impacts how a food business should operate. What can we learn from these different social media channels?

Twitter:  In the Twitter world, communication is fast and concise. Messages are limited to just 140 characters. You get the most timely information and relevant content right at your fingertips. This applies to the concession business as well. Food needs to be prepared promptly for the customer. They are hungry and seeking immediate gratification. The challenge is to meet the need for speed, yet still maintain a quality service experience.

Facebook:  The place where friends and family go to connect is Facebook. And the same should be true for your business. Make it friendly and inviting. Customers should feel welcomed to an environment that’s clean and organized. On Facebook, content is shared and when it gains a lot of views, it’s called going viral. You want your food to achieve that same popularity. That’s where foods like popcorn, cotton candy and funnel cakes come in. They can create a “word-of-mouth” sensation, because when people see others eating it then they’ll want some too.

Pinterest:  Pinterest draws you in with compelling visual images. It’s set up so that people can save (pin) items that they find interesting, plus they can share them with others. You can see why this format works well for pictures and recipes of delicious desserts or for those who are seeking the latest fashion trends. They key is that it engages our senses. Food must do the same. Make sure it is visually appealing. Whenever possible, use the sense of smell, like the scent of freshly popped popcorn. And of course, the ultimate goal is taste, so the flavor has to keep them coming back for more.

Stay tuned for future posts where we’ll discuss the “how-to’s” of social media.
