Best Food on a Stick!

While once a novelty item that included only corn dogs and cotton candy, today, food on a stick is a growing trend, with a number of foods now offered on a stick. Food on a stick is particularly popular at state fairs, food truck parks, and other places where people eat fried food on the go. The stick keeps hands grease-free and allows for easy noshing when standing around in crowded places. Read about some of the most decadent and popular foods on a stick.

Deep-fried sweet corn dog – Consisting of a hot dog sausage coated in fried cornmeal batter and served up on a stick, corn dogs are the original food on a stick; the U.S. patent for corn dogs and other foods on a stick was filed in 1927. One specialty corn dog is the deep-fried sweet corn dog, which you can get at the Iowa State Fair. This incarnation of the corn dog is double deep-fried in sweet corn batter and served with honey dipping sauce and a side of sweet corn. Yum!

Spaghetti and meatballs on a stick – You can get spaghetti and meatballs on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair, a place known for selling all kinds of foods on a stick – over 60, to be exact. For this food on a stick, cooked spaghetti and meatball mix are mashed into balls, which are coated in deep-fried garlic batter and garnished with marinara sauce. Who says you can’t get a gourmet meal on a stick?

Chocolate-covered bacon on a stick – The Wisconsin State Fair is the home of this delectable concoction. The treat is everything you want in an indulgent fair food –it’s sugary, salty, and utterly decadent. On the first day chocolate-covered bacon was introduced at the Wisconsin State Fair, the booth sold 7,000 slices, a testament to this fair food’s irresistibility.

French fry-coated hot dog on a stick – Although french fries and hot dogs are normally served side-by-side, this food on a stick combination puts both foods in the same bite. A french fry-coated hot dog on a stick may sound quintessentially American, but it and other artisan hot dogs on a stick are actually very popular in Seoul, South Korea, where they are sold by street vendors.

Deep-fried Twinkie on a stick – The deep-fried Twinkie on a stick was invented in Brooklyn about ten years ago, at Christopher Sell’s The Chop Shop. In the years that followed, the recipe became a hit at fairs. One fair where you can find this hedonistic incarnation of the popular Hostess snack is the Iowa State Fair. Another version of the Twinkie on a stick sold at the Iowa State Fair is the “Twinkie Log” on a stick, which consists of a frozen Twinkie dipped in white chocolate and rolled in cashews.

The list of foods offered on a stick will no doubt continue to grow as state fairs debut new creations each year. If you’re a food vendor yourself, you can even create your own foods on a stick. As long as you have some food sticks and a deep fryer, the possibilities are endless.
