Using Discipline To Improve Employee Performance

When most people hear the word “discipline”, it has a negative connotation. However, that should not necessarily be the case when it comes to employees. As a business owner, you invest a lot of time and money in your employees, making them a valuable asset in your business. To promote their success in your company, and ultimately the success of your business, discipline can be used constructively to enhance employee performance.

Using A Positive Discipline Strategy

The whole point of any type of employee discipline should revolve around changing behavior. While some behaviors such as embezzlement and harassment may involve severe negative consequences including termination, many other less detrimental behaviors can be changed through using positive discipline. Low productivity, minor mistakes and other employee issues can often be solved through training and positive incentives.

When an employee is not performing to the level that is needed in their role, there are a few ways to use positive discipline to give them a chance to improve. Consider using these techniques:

          – Training. Some employees need more training than others to understand what is expected of them in their role. Offer additional training in the area of opportunity to give them a chance to succeed.

          – Evaluate their role. In some cases, an employee may be in the wrong position or role for their talents. A person struggling in the sales department may excel if transferred to a production or administrative position.

          – Incentives. Sometimes it just takes a little extra incentive for employees to perform their best. It can be as simple as taking the time to recognize when a job is done well by just saying thank you.  In other cases, a reward or bonus for meeting their goals can be just what they needed to perform at the highest level.

By using positive discipline tactics first, you are giving your employees the chance to step up and be a valuable part of your team. Of course, there are times when an employee just is not cut out for the job or is not willing to meet your expectations. Documentation is important for legal reasons whenever you use positive or negative discipline, even in states that are “employment-at-will.” Always document your efforts to improve an employee’s performance and your conversations with them on the matter. If you eventually need to let them go, this will show that you had made an effort to improve their performance before terminating their employment.
