How Do You Prevent Small Business Owner Burn-Out?

When you first become an entrepreneur, it is exciting and fully engaging. Your dreams are becoming reality. You are more than willing to put in the long hours and commitment that running a successful business requires. Unfortunately, after a few years of working 12 or more hours a day, often seven days a week, the glamor fades and it is not uncommon for a small business owner to become burned out on running their company. This can lead to poor management decisions, fatigue, health issues and ultimately destroy everything you have worked so hard to build.

Steps To Preventing Burn-Out

Having business owner burn-out is not just about working too many hours or needing to take time off once a year. It is about finding a balance in your work and personal life every day to ensure you are taking time to reap your rewards, not just constantly sowing. As important as your business is, your health, family and personal interests must still have a place in your daily life to make you an effective business owner. Here are steps to take to prevent burn-out for the sake of yourself as well as your company.

* Delegate. If you have employees, you need to find ways to delegate some tasks off your plate and onto theirs to give you time away and less stress. Another way to delegate is by outsourcing certain management tasks that are tedious for you such as bookkeeping or marketing to relieve some of the burden.
* Focus on the positive. You need to be reminded why you started your business in the first place. Collect positive reminders of what you love and do well in your business, from customer thank you notes to awards, and keep them out where you can see them.
* Take care of yourself. If you are not healthy, physically or mentally, you will not perform your best. Exercise, eat right and take time to do what you are passionate about. Go watch your favorite team play, go camping on the weekend or just enjoy time with your friends and family. It will do your mind and body good!

Running a business is hard work, yet it can also be very rewarding. The trick is to find that balance of work and play that keeps you from getting overworked and frustrated. By taking more time for yourself, you can become more productive when you are at work and less likely to fall prey to burn-out.
